Getting the most from a work placement

So you have finally been accepted and its your first day at your new company, here are a few pointers for your first day:
  • Punctuality – BE ON TIME
  • Smile, say hello and introduce yourself around the office and be polite
  • Dress appropriately
  • Make sure you are aware of company policy relating to when/how long lunch is, internet use, dress code etc.
  • Ask to have a meeting with your manager to discuss what you would like to achieve from your placement and what work you will be expected to do. Show initiative and keenness which will only impress.
Throughout your placement:
  • Be enthusiastic about what you do and if you do not understand anything just ask. You will not be expected to know everything and your willingness to learn will actually be appreciated. This will also help you when you return to your studies.
  • Always work to your highest ability and do not present something that is not your best work. Keep copies of all your work in a file and keep a diary. At the end of your placement write a review and ask your manager to evaluate it and give their comments (be prepared to accept constructive criticism). This will once again show your initiative and will help you if you undertake similar work in the future - create your personal library. This will also help when you begin to work towards your chartership, (see ICE page).
  • Speak to your manager about completing ICE objectives and possibly a mock training scheme (especially if it’s a year placement). For more information visit the ICE website.
  • Watch out for any training and CPD events. Try to attend as many lunch time presentations as possible.
  • Try to move around different departments and get a varied experience. Companies are generally willing to let you do this so again speak to your manager. When you move around create a database for contacts as this will be very valuable in the future especially if you get problems at university and need some advice.
  • Become involved in social events. Drinks after work, sports or common interests among colleagues are all valuable. You stand a greater chance of being successful if you are sociable and people in the office like you, then the company will want to employ you again.
  • Show real enthusiasm and offer to help promote the company at your university through organising presentations and introducing future work experience students. This is a great way to gain sponsorship and the offer of a graduate job.
Most importantly though, ENJOY YOURSELF and GOOD LUCK.
